PREAC Workshop - The materiality of the book
Forgotten books: Re-awakening the inked image, Re-inking forgotten pages, Re-activating isolated contents. Understanding the challenges of the book through its materiality.
Each year, Le Signe, the national centre for graphic design, devotes one of its exhibitions to the youngest. For the 2020 children’s exhibition, Les Éditions du livre, which specialises in artists’ books for children, has been invited to take over the premises. In connection with this event, the PRÉAC Design Graphique will also honour this book that is handled, folded or unfolded by itself, this book made of paper, fabric, wood, held in the hand or moved around.
During workshops led by graphic designers, the trainees will be able to discover new techniques, new ways of shaping or staging the book. Visits to exhibitions, conferences, meetings, etc. complement these practical sessions to allow participants to exchange on their teaching practices, to imagine projects and to discover fields related to books.
Objective of the workshop :
- To understand the challenges of the book by deconstructing it.
After a presentation of book-objects that highlight different creative principles, the trainees will be invited to recreate a narrative and an object from existing books that they will slice, saw, cut open, etc. The physical deconstruction of the book will allow them to understand what it is made of, and then to learn how to deconstructing the book physically will allow them to understand what it is composed of, and then to learn how to recreate a narrative, manipulate the visuals, compose on the page, give rhythm to the edition, and requires the and requires mastering some simple binding techniques.
